So, as planned, we tried to get my nephew to use the sled;
We managed to at least have him get on.

However, it didn't quite work out as we planned; Loic had no interest in the sled; he took off as soon as possible. Too bad, because there is a couple of heaps behind our house that are great for sliding. From what my Dad told me, they could be leftovers from a protected path to an old fortlet in ruin not too far from our house. Interestingly enough, part of those heaps are pierced with large holes in which stand old, rusted metal poles. Apparently, those are former machine-gun nests installed back around World War I to protect a zeppelins depot.
Could make you nervous, when you think too much about it; from time to time, not matter the corner of the country, we still discover old ammunition from the previous wars, still able to explode. As a matter of fact, tourists in Verdun are strictly advised to never stray from the paths. We don't have the same kind of problem around my hometown, but I do know there was a case where a couple of kids were killed, when I was very young. On the other hand, they shouldn't have played with an old shell they found in a field...
Ah, damn... Let's about something nicer.
So, Loic wasn't very interested by the sled. Didn't stop him, though, to carry 'big balls of snow' around:

He really enjoyed himself ;)
And so did I, but in a different way. My driving lesson was finally annuled (though the teacher didn't think about telling me...), and I ended up with more free time than what I had anticipated. So I build more snowmen... or rather, snow rabbits!

BIG snow rabbits, I must add. Loic wasn't impressed, though. He did try to hit the rabbit several times. Guess he was unhappy I spend more time working on the bunny than playing with him :)
Didn't stop him to try and decorate it further once I had finished.

Good thing my Mom usually keep a lot of plastic corks, just in case ^^
And I didn't stop with just ONE rabbit; since the sky was clear, and the snow heavier than yesterday, so ideal for more construction (and rapidely melting; we're still fairly close to Spring, after all), I did a second one, with help from my sister.

It was actually rather hard to put the second ball upon the largest one; I... slightly got carried away and made it too big at first. It was so heavy so we had to cut it down gradually until we were able to carry it and put it in its proper place. I was more careful with the ball making the head.
My sister was a great help in making the face, especially the cheeks and the muzzle, as well as digging slightly to form the eyes. To make it stand out more, she even used ink to get some color on it:

Of course, the black ink just spread a little bit more than what we wanted, and we couldn't quite correct it, despite our efforts. Then again, it was the first time we tried it.
Despite that, we're happy with the result; we even added a scarf, something we don't usually do:

That's probably the biggest snowman/rabbit we ever did. Note that we both are about 1,64m tall, and with the ears, the bunny is actually taller than us.
On a sad note, as I write those lines, the first snow rabbit fell down. The weather is getting increasingly warmer; not by much, but enough that, with the sun, all the snowmen build those last two days are swiftly melting. RIP, snow bunny.
I'm thinking about posting some more pictures of this rabbit on deviant art...
On the whole, despite the problems it caused and still causes in several part of the country (villages still closed off due to snowdrifts, closed off highways, power cuts, roofs caving in...), I'm rather happy with the way this week turned out. I always wanted to be able to play in the snow with my nephew, and I got my wish after all :)
And just in time, because normally, the kids are going back to their mother's house tomorrow. Normally. Since traffic isn't quite back to normal everywhere, the journey might not be easy.
We'll see them again toward the end of April, if everything work out between the parents - though we'll have a small problem, because the end of their visit will overlap with the date of our cousin wedding, and we can hardly take them with us...
Ah, well, wait and see.

Date: 2013-03-14 05:29 pm (UTC)I guess we were lucky the sky cleared up so fast.
Now, it's going to melt and hopefully, we'll have a nicer weather in the coming days.

Uh... looks like I've spoken too soon; it's snowing again outside... and not little snowflakes, either! O_O
