I have learnt that one of my hometown's bookshops is going to close down in about two weeks time.
Makes me feel sad.
And why does it close, after thirty years? For financial reasons.
The 'Furet du Nord' is one of the biggest bookshop chain in the Nord of France. The biggest and most successful one is in Lille, and in a way, we were pretty lucky to have one installed near our home. Sadly, the shop apparently lost money steadily those last three years, and the big bosses decided to close the one in Maubeuge because it wasn't profitable anymore.
The worst, though? Aside of the soon-to-be-closed one, there is only about two other bookshops in town. And those are not big ones. Meaning, we were already having trouble getting books directly in stores, but now, it's going to get even harder.
*sighs*
That's depressing.

The shop was probably the better one in diversity we had in town, though the 'Vauban', the other main bookshop in town, has better services, especially on orders. Le Furet du Nord was the biggest, though, and the one I went to for comics and my sister for art supplies.
I enjoyed stopping at the Furet when I came back from high school as a teen, or even now when I take a stroll downtown.
There're few enough shops downtown (lot closed down, moved to another area or were replaced by mobile phone sellers) as it is, so it's never a good news when a business close, but this one?
Somehow, I consider it a personal tragedy (granted, on a small scale, but still...). To go to another Furet shop, we'll need to go to Valenciennes or Lille, where the nearest ones are, and it's 45min/1h away, at the very least.
Small towns can't win -_-
