Summary: "That scientist of your is far too cute for his own good."
It was a fight like many other before. Or at least Red Alert thought it was. The Twins had managed to send the Seekers plunging toward the floor, and if Skywarp had managed to avoid the crash by teleporting, Thundercracker had not; now grounded, he was face to face with Red Alert. Well, not exactly face to face; there was the size difference to consider.
Yes, it was a fight just like all the others, in the mists of battle. As he relentlessly punched the blue seeker, he heard something that almost made him freeze.
“That scientist of your is too cute for his own good.”
The mumbled words coming from the Decepticon’s vocalizer made Red Alert pause in his fight, his fist a few inches away from Thundercracker’s face.
The Security Director spoke dangerously slowly.
“What. Did. You. Just. Say?”
“You heard me perfectly well; he’s far too cute for his own good. Far too innocent too,” he added after a few second. “He doesn’t even notice he’s being stared at.”
Red Alert clenched his fist. Thundercracker had stopped struggling, no longer attempting to dislodge the Autobot. Instead, he was passive, his optics turned toward the other fighters.
Why had he said that?
Red Alert thought fast. Perceptor wasn’t the most attractive ‘bot around, but he certainly could catch the attention of a few people and end up in their berth, if only for comfort after an hard battle.
Ratchet and Wheeljack, for example, had been known for sharing their berth with the sometimes distraught scientist back on Cybertron. Not that they spoke much about what they had done and why, but one could guess.
There had been rumors Perceptor’s bonded had died in an attack. But as far as he knew, Perceptor had never been bonded. His records were clear on that point. But that didn't mean he hadn't lost the person he wanted to be with...
Like so many mechs and femmes before.
Who else? A few Autobots, certainly, would pay attention to him. Perceptor was a nice person, and he never said 'no' when someone asked him something...
Yes, he could see how some Autobots would likely try to interface with him.
And also why far too many Decepticons would do the same, he realized. The Constructicons, the Stunticons, the Combaticons, the Seekers, Soundwave, Megatron himself...
Any of them could try something. Or none of them. He didn’t know each Decepticons opinion on that kind of warfare...
But...
There had been rumors of what happened to captives Autobots, but it had been nothing more than that. Rumors. Rumors of terrible things that happened in the dark cells, by one or several assailant, sometimes for informations, sometimes for ‘fun’.
Nobody had wanted to believe it could be true. But every rumor had some underlying thruth.Red Alert's optics narrowed as he scanned the battlefield to find the microscope.
He found him near Ratchet, trying to work on the injured. He had his hands deep into one of the Minibot chassis – Brawn, it seemed – and was trying his best to help.
Nobody tried to shoot their way. Of course, it was probably because Ratchet was there, and any ‘Cons with a working processor knew better than try to shoot the medic in front of Prime. There would be Pit to pay if they dared to do something so stupid.
Ratchet was well liked by his fellow Autobots despite his rather awful temper.
Red Alert wouldn’t have thought much about it usually. But now, he could see... sometimes, there were glances toward the Microscope. Glances and stares. And not of the amical kind. Lustful wasn’t exactly right either, even if some were. Who could think about merging in the middle of a fight?!
Vortex, it seemed, though his gaze was more on his fellow Decepticons. His optics promised pain... and something more. Red Alert shuddered. He didn’t want to think about that right now...
From their position and in the middle of the battle, he doubted his fellow Autobots could see that. They were too focused on their own adversaries, and Red Alert couldn’t blame them. He himself could only look around because Thundercracker wasn’t doing anything to fight back for now.
He could clearly see the medic and his temporary assistant working on their patients.
And nearby, behind a rock, he could see the silhouette of the Air Commander. And even if Red Alert couldn’t see his optics, he didn’t doubt for a second he was watching Perceptor.
“Starscream is looking at him...” he whispered.
“It would not be the first time,” answered the Decepticon tensely.
Red Alert’s head tilted slightly. There was something in Thundercracker’s voice that was familiar. He sounded a bit like himself when he thought of Firestar and Inferno together, even if they were only partners on a mission.
“Are you... jealous?” he asked after a while.
The Seeker sneered at him.
“Don’t be ridiculous. Why should I be jealous of anyone? But pay attention to my words: careful with the scientist, or don’t be surprised if something... unpleasant happen to him. Or to any other ‘bot, by the way.”
Not jealous...yeah, right.
They stared at each other in the optics. Both new very well what the other thought, what was implied. No name was necessary. The threat existed and wouldn't stop existing just because they removed a particular mech from the equation.
Perhaps some new security’s measures were in order. Red Alert knew a few mechs would grumble, but he also knew Prowl and Prime would share his worries and would give him their consent. Better safe than sorry in the end, after all.
“Thank you for the warning,” the Security Director said stiffly. “ I will take the necessary steps to ensure he will not be harmed.”
After that, he sent his fist into the face of the Seeker, who howled in pain.
Wise advices or not, they were still on the battle field and Red Alert had no intention of losing this fight.
He would worry about everything else later.
