Funny how you can be reminded of something just by a glance...

The other day, my brothers all came home, bringing wives or girlfriends. For the occasion, we played board games. Milton Bradley games to be exact. And in one box, there was a leaflet on the different games available at the time (end of the 80s, beginning of the 90s) in France.

Guess Who?, Hotels, Downfall, Mouse Trap, Space Crusade,...

Mind you, we had most of them at a point, even though they are now in pieces. No surprise. You just can't let 5 kids (7or 10 if the cousins were there) between, say, 5 to 20 years old near a board games without losing cards, dices or important parts of a mecanism...

Same thing for puzzles, but it's another story.

Anyway, among the games pictured, there was 'Hero Quest'.

And suddenly, I was 8 or 10 years old again, playing with my two youngest brothers and cousins (well, youngest... they're all older than me). I was the 'wizard' again, staying close to the 'barbarian', the 'dwarf' and the 'elf'.

We played almost every week and, as it rare enough to be noted, nobody was shouting or fighting.

Aside from the times my brother the 'elf' used the magic cards he had chosen, of course. The wind magic. Those who played know what they were. Anyway, he used one of his cards and could go everywhere he wanted. You can imagine how the rest of us was pleased... My cousins wanted to outlaw the spells.

But the game was fun anyway. My brother the 'game master' created for us several adventures. He still have them noted in a book somewhere in his room with the game, which is still in a very good state, aside from the 'barbarian' who now use an hammer instead of the broadsword...

Can't remember who broken the sword but I remember the cries; my brother wasn't happy...

He was caught in the game more than us. As the 'game master', he always tried to improve the adventures by adding new stuff. He even introduced the concept of alchemy in the game after playing the video game 'Secret of Evermore'.

Endless hours of fun which stopped a long time ago.

Now, we're adult for the most part, and the board games stay undisturbed and almost forgotten until someone decide to bring them in the open again.

...

Where had my childhood gone?
